Untuk meningkatkan stabilitas produksi dan ketersediaan benih varietas unggul bawang merah yang telah dihasilkan maka dilakukan penelitian komersialisasi bawang merah varietas baru dalam rangka peningkatan produktivitas, kualitas dan kontinuitas suplai bawang merah. Tujuan khusus dari penelitian adalah meningkatkan ketersediaan benih bermutu dari varietas unggul baru melalui: 1) produksi dan diseminasi benih varietas unggul baru dalam rangka komersialisasi hasil riset, 2) meningkatkan teknologi budidaya bawang merah ramah lingkungan dan 3) mengembangkan model bisnis dan sistem informasi kelayakan usaha hortikultura bawang merah.<br \/>\nKegiatan ini melibatkan pengguna varietas, yaitu produsen benih, petani, produsen bawang merah olahan dan konsumen (pemasar) sehingga produk yang dihasilkan dapat segera diterima oleh pasar. Kegiatan akan dilaksanakan di Kabupaten Solok, Provinsi Sumatera Barat (dataran tinggi) dan di Kabupaten Nganjuk, Provinsi Jawa Timur (dataran rendah). Luaran yang dihasilkan pada tahun pertama adalah telah tersedianya benih bawang bawang merah bersertifikat sebanyak 44 ton berat basah atau kira-kira 31, 3 ton berat kering (Benih SS Sakato dan Tajuk).
