Genetic Parameter Estimation of Root Morphophisiology Characters of Zea mays Strains Tolerant Acid Soil

Abstract. Eight strains of Zea mays were used as plant material to estimate the genetic parameters of root morphophysiology character and obtain root morphophysiology characters that can be used as selection criteria on acid soil. Plant is planted in Rhizotron pots. Information about estimation of genetic parameters, covering genetic diversity and heritability, correlations between morphophysiology characters, important in development of adaptive varieties to acid soil, especially aluminium stress. The result showed that the strains were significantly different on some root morphophisiology characters observed (number of root, rooting diameter, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight and root dry weight). There showed genetic diversity on some root morphophysiology characters observed. Media was also significantly different on root morphophysiology character observed. It showed that acid soil media and optimum media give different influence to character of root morphophysiology. Character of rooting diameter having positive correlation with shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight and root dry weights. The coefficients of genetic diversity character of rooting diameter (19.78 %), shoot fresh weight (18.77 %), root fresh weight (25.50 %), shoot dry weight (30.15%) and root dry weigh (27.48 %) indicating moderate and wide genetic diversity criteria. Highly heritability indicated by character of rooting diameter (0.87), shoot wet weights (0.70), root wet weights (0.60), shoot dry weight (0.80) and root dry weights (0.54). Character of rooting diameter and shoot dry weight can be used as selection criteria on acid soil condition because having highly heritability value followed by medium to highly genetic variability.
